Do you want your product to survive transport? Proper packaging is key. Custom design is probably necessary. Using corrugated cardboard, foam, and wood crating – or a combination of the three – is probably your best materials for a safe trip. Ultimately, a proper drop test is important for you to make sure even the best design really works.
Before sending it to an expensive lab, do some of the tests internally. Then send the package to your best client and have him send it back. If it survives this process, then chances are you are good.
Your final decision is to evaluate the overall value of your product, how many, and for how long you will be shipping them. This will give you info on total project value so you can decide to move forward or get final lab test approval.
